Regarding pesticides and herbicides

There are a number of threats to garden productivity, some of which are very difficult to control. So, often I'm tempted to take "serious actions" against both weeds and predators in my garden and a few times I have succumbed to feelings of expediency to do "something." I've been aware of risks and hazards, but this article from consumernotice.org gave me useful information in common agricultural practices for managing threats to crops and caused me to reconsider. The announcement in the Neighbors magazine brought in 3 gardeners: Jackie, Trevor and Stacy. They were new to Trellis, but not to gardening.Old-time members Gloria and David were present. Topics ranged from the stated compatible plants to cover crops, soil amendments,  watering raised beds and container plantings; row covers, cold frames, tents and greenhouses; onions, potatoes, tomatoes and peppers. The conversations were informative and enthusiastic. A few highlights of our discussion of…See More

Remembering what I did that worked

As I began my 2014 gardens I realized there are some facts and practices that I don't automatically remember from year to year. When is it too late to plant the peas? Why was it I used that particular soil amendment? What did I do wrong last year with tomatoes? Do I want to plant garbanzos again? And so on.

So I began writing things down, but I'm no good with paper - too hard to keep up and find specific information when I need it. So I created a wiki at…

Vermicomposting and worm bins

I've been researching vermicomposting bins. There are quite a few choices, and different techniques. Here's what I have come up with.

The worm dude (thewormdude.com) recommends the worm inn: http://www.theworminn.com/products-page/

This is a flow-through type and doesn't use plastic bins and has a single compartment for worms and scraps. It seems expensive to me. I wonder how easy…
