Trellis Community Vegetable Gardening Forum

Sharing our knowledge of vegetable gardening in the Snoqualmie Valley area

Hi folks,

Discovered Starbucks isn't doing a publically accessible burlap bag recycle thing anymore... but found an alternate source Sustainable NE Seattle, that's collecting / re-distributing burlap resources from many stores/restaurants/organizations, which opens us up for more options.  I sent them an email to get more details...... here's their reply.....

We're happy to help you get all your burlap needs met. But there are many
different burlap bag types and grades, depending on the use you want to put them
to. And just as importantly, there are _significant_ pricing differences between
a small order (100+ bags) and a medium-sized order (400+ bags) and a large order
(800+ bags), even if each was similiarly picked up at our facility.
So to help you with pricing we'd need to have a slightly narrower idea of
the range of numbers needed, and know what kinds of bags we need to quote you
(based on the use you want to put them to - erosion control? weedblock? sheet
mulching? container planting? geo-technical filter material? etc...)
So, what do Trellis members prefer?
Respond to this thread with your thoughts and in the meantime, I'll reach out to other gardening-related groups in the valley/East side and see who else is interested...... obviously, the greater the volume, the better the price.

Hi folks,
We have 1900 sacks in the final count.
Starbucks bundles them into groups of 800 each that weigh about 1,000lbs per bundle, plus they have loose ones we can take to make up the full count. So.... I can't fit all 1900 in my husband's truck.

Anyone out there with a truck willing to convoy down with me to Kent to go get them?
If so, please call me 425.442.5492 to set up logistics.
They're open 6:30am - 2:00pm (no pick up between 8:30am - 11:30am), so we can make it a crack of dawn exercise or a lunch hour exercise.

Any truck owners out there willing to do a nice thing for our community?

I'm still in need a helper to come with me to Starbucks to pick up the sacks.....

Carol, I could drive our truck down and help you pick them up. I will need to go at lunch hour rather than before 8:30. We could leave around 10:40 to be there right around 11:30. I could go down on Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

Thank you Hannah.  Much appreciated.

I'm trying to adjust my Tuesday workload to free me up in the middle of the day...... right now, I've got two meetings I'll need to navigate around... not looking good, but will keep you posted.   Wednesday is totally out I'm afraid.  Call me: 425.222.9417 to swap phone/email info so we can more readily coordinate things.  Even if these two days don't work, we'll look around for others that do!  I'm a lot more flexible if we can make a crack of dawn visit......

Carol.

Just can't get free for a mid-day run tomorrow, sorry.

I'm available for a crack of dawn run Wednesday or Friday if anyone out there with a truck can come with me.  Otherwise we'll have to try again next week......

Please call me: 425.222.9417 if you can help.

Thx.

CW

Status update.

Big thank you goes out to Cheryl Conklin, who's available to come with me to go get the bags.

We're up to a final count of 2400!  Oh my!  I'm now coordinating with Starbucks on a pick up day/time (hoping for this Wednesday morning).

We'll be in touch with those of you who ordered to tell you about the pick up logistics.  Stay tuned.

Thanks also go out to Hannah for pitching in and trying to find a day/time that worked.  :)

I've confirmed things with Starbucks, and Cheryl and I are set to go pick the bags up tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

Here's the plan...... we've got over a ton of bags to haul, so to keep things simple the bags will be staged on the driveway at my house and those of you who submitted a request will need to come and get them yourself (honor system).  They'll be stacked under a tarp on the drive near the potting shed (you can't miss it).

5430 Lake Alice Rd, SE.. Fall City. WA.  We share the top of our driveway with our uphill neighbors. Take the PAVED lane that goes down through the woods (we're set back from the road).

425.442.5492.  Call before you come over.  I'll happily help you load your vehicle if I'm available.

We went and picked up the bags this morning.  The bails were HUGE so we could only fit one into each of our trucks.  Cheryl's going to go back and pick up the third bail on Friday morning and bring it to Trellis meeting on Saturday.

HANNAH (400 bags) AND RUTH ANN/LARRY(400 bags)  -  please plan to collect your bags on Saturday at the Trellis meeting.  The bail contains 800 bags in it, so you two can split the final haul.

EVERYONE ELSE - per earlier posting, please come and get yours from my house... they're here and ready whenever you want to come and get them.  Please call before you come so I know you're on our property and can check you off the list as having claimed your booty: 425.442.5492.  Would appreciate you all claiming your allotments promptly so we can have our driveway back!

Thanks

Thanks so much, Carol, for all your deligent, hard work. We'll haul our 400 bags from the Trellis meeting on Sat.

Larry

For everyone who ordered sacks info:
The load of sacks from Cheryl's truck on Sat. only contained 500 not the 800 expected. Thus, the sacks that Carol has at her place might be short too. If the later people find a large shortage of sacks at Carol's, the error is with Starbucks.
Larry

Everyone's allotment has been accounted for..... don't have any left at my house.

When we discovered the bail counts were short I gave everyone slightly smaller counts than they originally requested to even out the impact on everyone.  Starbucks estimates were way off.  There's plenty more down at their warehouse if anyone wants to go and get another bail.  Just need to call ahead of time and have a big truck!  Happy to provide the contact information - let me know.
