Sharing our knowledge of vegetable gardening in the Snoqualmie Valley area

Growing Groceries 2019–2020 series of classes

Another season of Growing Groceries starts on October 9th at the Grange in Issaquah. (And another series in Seattle on Beacon Hill this year.) The classes occur about every 3 weeks over the fall, winter, and spring. Although we've designed the series for beginning and intermediate gardeners, I learned something new at each class last year. (After 40 years of vegetable gardening, I probably could be considered at least an intermediate gardener!)

The speakers are all Master Gardeners who have lots of experience with the subject they will speak about.

I'll be giving a talk on soil on October 30th, sharing what I've learned about soil science and gardening for soil improvement. Kirby Cartwright will share the evening with me, sharing knowledge about home composting.

You can come for one week's class, or more. Early registration helps us know how many to expect, but it is probable that you can drop in without pre-registration too. Details about the series and pre-registration at

Below is the official announcement:

WSU Extension King County Master Gardeners present Growing Groceries, an educational series of eleven classes on growing healthy vegetables using research-based sustainable gardening methods. Classes are designed for the novice or intermediate vegetable gardener and start in October.

Topics include soil preparation, garden design, and seed starting as well as the main edible plant families (alliums, brassicas, legumes and nightshades), which are taught coincident with their planting times. Classes will encompass topics from the principles of vegetable gardening in our maritime climate to variety selection, cultural requirements, major diseases and pests, pest management techniques, and harvesting strategies.

Taught by King County Master Gardeners, classes will be held at The Grange, 145 NE Gilman Blvd in Issaquah beginning October 9th and beginning October 22nd at El Centro de la Raza, 2524 16th Ave S in Seattle on Beacon Hill adjacent to Link light rail. See full program descriptions at http://www.mgfkc.org/resources/growinggroceries. Register for the series ($55) or for individual classes ($5).
