Trellis Community Vegetable Gardening Forum

Sharing our knowledge of vegetable gardening in the Snoqualmie Valley area

Hi folks,

Discovered Starbucks isn't doing a publically accessible burlap bag recycle thing anymore... but found an alternate source Sustainable NE Seattle, that's collecting / re-distributing burlap resources from many stores/restaurants/organizations, which opens us up for more options.  I sent them an email to get more details...... here's their reply.....

We're happy to help you get all your burlap needs met. But there are many
different burlap bag types and grades, depending on the use you want to put them
to. And just as importantly, there are _significant_ pricing differences between
a small order (100+ bags) and a medium-sized order (400+ bags) and a large order
(800+ bags), even if each was similiarly picked up at our facility.
So to help you with pricing we'd need to have a slightly narrower idea of
the range of numbers needed, and know what kinds of bags we need to quote you
(based on the use you want to put them to - erosion control? weedblock? sheet
mulching? container planting? geo-technical filter material? etc...)
So, what do Trellis members prefer?
Respond to this thread with your thoughts and in the meantime, I'll reach out to other gardening-related groups in the valley/East side and see who else is interested...... obviously, the greater the volume, the better the price.

Thanks, Carol, for doing the research.

We want burlap bags for weed control to cover a 2000 square foot area. We can give you an exact (or amount based upon number needed to make a quantity fit) bags number once we know the per bag size if that's possible.

Thanks for your efforts,

Larry

Carol, I would also want burlap bags for weed block. Let me know if you find out the size of the bags and I will estimate how many I would want.

Thanks for looking into this!

Hi folks,

Some of you have reached out asking about bag sizes so you can calculate quantities..... here's the scoop...

Almost all the bags are around 28"x39" or so - a few are smaller, some slightly larger. I usually figure with a minimal overlap a bag covers 7.5sq ft so about 90 square feet per dozen bags.
If you're still interested, please get me your counts in by Friday, March 5th. Thx.
Carol
Thanks, Carol, for the additional info.

We want 380 (min) to 400 (max) bags for weed block.

Per your bag dimensions I'm figuring 6 square feet per bag and coverage of 2 ft by 3 ft. Plus I took exact dimensions of each of our areas since some lengths require extra overlap (for example a 16 foot length needs 5 three foot bags lengths and 1 two foot bag width). Thus, people might want to error on the high side of their estimates.

I also am thinking I will want around 300 bags, but it depends on the cost per bag, because I don't really want to spend more than $10-$15 for all of them. Let me know when you have price range per bag and I will give you an exact number of bags. Does that work?

Keep the requested amounts coming in.  The higher the total count, the lower the cost.

We're up to about 750 bags so far, so I'm hoping that'll turn into a nice low cost per bag...... deadline is March 5th.

Once I get the final count, I'll confirm the price per bag and get back to you to see if you still want to make the purchase.  Stay tuned.

Another update...... I did some more digging on the original Starbucks lead and voila.... it's paid off!  They contacted me today and they'll give us their burlap bags for FREE!  So, who else wants to place an order?  Let me know and I'll add you to the count.  Deadline is March 5th.
Thanks Carol for doing all the leg work. I would like to have 300 for weed block. Thanks again. Susan M
Got you on the list.... 300.
Hi Carol,
I could use 200.
Thanks so much, see you Saturday at Saltbox Farm
