Text on the graphic that accompanied the meeting notice wasn't legible because it displayed at a reduced size. This is that information:

Nasturtium helps to deter nasty pests like whitefly, catepillars and beetles and is a sacrificial plant for aphids. Nasturtiums also have edible leaves, flowers and seeds.

Lavendar is not only beautiful and fragrant, it is a tough, hardy plant that helps repel bad insects like whiefly and moths, and draws in good insects like bees.

Mint is a tasty and helpful garden companion that helps deter nasty pests like moths, aphis, ants and rodents. Many varieties are highly invasive, so container planting is a good option.

Onions, chives and garlic help deter pests, improve soil and reduce systemic dieseases.

Other flowering plants that can help reduce garden pests and/or draw pollinators into your home garden are marigold, petunia, poppy, asyssium, borage, lupin, tansy, geranium and zinnia.

The plants are from a vine that I have cloned before, so I know of their potential. The source vine is a variant of Concord that has grown well in the Snoqualmie valley for years. Berries mature somewhat earlier than traditional Concord cultivars. They are very tasty, seeded red/purple grapes that are perfect for juice and jelly, as well as eating.

I bought special potting and gardening soils, a mycorrhizal mixture, and suitable pots, incurring a significant expense, specifically for this project, so I am accepting a small, free will donation for each, say $3 to $5.

There are a number of threats to garden productivity, some of which are very difficult to control. So, often I'm tempted to take "serious actions" against both weeds and predators in my garden and a few times I have succumbed to feelings of expediency to do "something." I've been aware of risks and hazards, but this article from consumernotice.org gave me useful information in common agricultural practices for managing threats to crops and caused me to reconsider.

See…

Consider also what this seems to mean for gardening and farming in Europe and America over the last several hundred years. As people increasingly moved away from small farming toward city life, were there fewer and fewer gardeners spread diversely across the countryside, with more and more of the gardening activity concentrated with the people in more and more urbanized areas?

However, PREVIOUS to those several hundred years, what was the picture? Were there MORE pollinators spread all over Europe and America, because there were gardeners everywhere? Were there fewer pollinators, spread more broadly but also more thinly? How many pollinators were transported between regions and even between continents along with the plants people carried with them in many migrations?

What about the time before humans? Were there more pollinators before there were gardens? What sort of pollinator populations were supported by wildflowers and other natural plants?

These and other questions seem worth pursuing to help preserve pollinators.
Attracting Owls To Your Backyard And Whytag:trellis.ning.com,2021-02-11:4877250:Topic:928212021-02-11T03:04:04.590ZJessaiah Zurehttp://trellis.ning.com/profile/JessaiahZure

Full disclosure: My 2 pictures that I submitted today are from my Ellensburg home. I failed to mention that when I submitted them. After reading the fine print about being a local Snoqualmie Valley based group I had to correct my submissions. We still have a Fall City home and garden that my wife takes pride in. My pictures were just to show what a small space can provide under ideal growing conditions. Kevin Little, Manastash Farm
